Camus utilized The Stranger as a platform to explore absurdity, a concept central to his writings and at the core of his treatment of questions about the meaning of life.

He agreed with some proponents of existentialist thought that life has no inherent meaning, but he criticized others for their pursuit of personal meaning. Taking this piece to heart, there is no way that the author of this novel, Paul Binding, identifies as gay...which is problematic. Camus’s concept of the absurd instead implored people to accept life’s lack of meaning and rebel by rejoicing in what life does offer.

After a ferocious early springtime storm, young Norwegian sailor Hans Lyngstrand is shipwrecked in the English Channel near the coastal Kent town of Dengate; he is one of few survivors. Interesting book if this is to your taste. This murder is what separates the two parts of the story. A friend once told me he thought people come in and out ofone's ife and that's what happens here. Elements of this philosophy can be seen in Meursault, as he refuses to behave as if there is meaning where there is none—or, as Camus himself put it in a preface to The Stranger, Meursault “does not play the game.” Society thus feels threatened and cuts off Meursault’s head.

It takes about halfway through the 400-page book for the main character to develop and act on a queer affection for his boarding house-mate, Hans Lyngstra.
