Obsessed is a wonderful memoir of the author, Allison Britz’ life. Quickly, more and more fears and obsessions became part of her daily life. I felt like the book could have included more about the author's recovery from OCD, since the book seemed a bit unbalanced. It's fast paced and although symptoms differ with every case of OCD this book demonstrates the stress and pressure that people with OCD suffer from. Often OCD is associated with germaphobia or lists/obsessive order and this book helped me understand the breadth of manners OCD can take over someone's life, not only those as typically stereotyped. I hope to write a review, and I think the only thing I wish Allison Britz had done differently is to make it VERY clear that people with OCD (at least that I know of) don't hear literal voices, because I feel like that gets a little fuzzy in her narrative at times. I learned that sometimes the “monster” would appear in the brain with a feeling of a lot of bees flying around inside your brain.

I'm so thankful she had the nerve to write her incredible story to help others know that they aren't alone. I though the inclusion of so many characters was confusing at times, but it reflected that this book is an autobiography. My other half has a touch of OCD. It is a little slow in my opinion. One aspect of this book that I enjoyed was how the book was written in present tense like a novel. Super inspiring. This book was very emotional, especially when the mental illness took over Allison's daily life. A lengthy memoir that reads like a novel, Britz's story starts at a slow pace and gains momentum as the severity of her condition increases. Britz, though, is a talented writer; it's very easy to sympathize and understand her daily struggles.

This is the author's first book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good read. The content is great, and I learnt a lot about OCD, however the writing for the majority of the book was bland and repetitive, and I ended up starting a new book and reading a few pages (if any) of this one on the side because it couldn't hold my attention. Honestly a really surprising, educational, and thoughtful read. I checked this out from the library because it was listed in my 5th grade daughter’s Scholastic book order, but I told her not to read it (at least not yet). I was hoping it would be a book to show her how mental illness impacts young adults which it did but it was full of biased and political ideology.
