9700k vs 9900k temps
Posted on October 8th, 2020As I understand it, soldering the 8700K would be risky as the silicon could crack during the heating of the soldering process. © 2020 TechSpot, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Under almost the same conditions but with 1.4v, more voltage, the 2600K runs at least 20 degrees cooler. Intel has been forced to increase the thickness of the silicon to better handle the stresses of the heating process required to melt the solder.
Honestly, if I can get it to sit comfortably on 5.0Ghz without setting my leg hair on fire, I'll be pretty happy with it. The 9900K pushed consumption 9% higher hitting 255 watts which is 13% more power than the 16-core Threadripper 2950X system consumed. Basically Intel has been too aggressive with clock speeds and this has resulted in an 8-core CPU that’s almost too hot to handle.
That’s enough power consumption data for the moment, let’s check out overclocking performance. So 9900k runs cool under a 700mm of rad custom loop.
In the past we’ve delided 7700K and 8700K chips with amazing results. The 9600K is just a 9900K with 2 dies disabled, but you do get the smaller L3 cache. 29.73% faster CPU speed? So this means when overclocking the soldered chip was just 3 degrees cooler than what we saw with the 8th gen model using paste. Alibaba stock has surged 42 percent this year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is coming for your disk space. Or suck it up and just get the actual improvement, the 9900K.
Why is Intel Core i9-9900K better than Intel Core i7-8700K? Along with pricing, the other major issue was the operating temperature.
i7 9700k = i5 8600K Dont compare different things They just changed the naming and since +2 cores they upped the prices. This saw the 8086K hit a peak package temp of 88 C and a core temp of 87 C with a typical load voltage of 1.373v. To prove this Der8auer sanded down the Core i5-9600K silicon by 0.2mm and this reduced the temperature by 5.5 C, a rather significant improvement. But so far I've seen people overclocking to square on 5Ghz and getting a nearly 20 degree jump.
So for the 4.5 GHz auto voltage comparison the soldered method reduced temperatures by 11 degrees, a 15% reduction though as I noted voltages were also 8% lower. This saw the 9900K running at 1.16v for the most part and the 8086K at 1.26v. To find out we’ve disabled two 9900K cores which effectively turns it into an 8700K or 8086K. Overclocking these 8-core parts to 5.1 GHz wasn’t easy, it required 1.375v and a massive liquid cooler, you aren’t hitting this frequency with a 240mm closed loop cooler, 5 GHz is probably off the table as well, but we will talk about thermal performance soon. Thinner silicon would complicate the process, likely making it more time consuming and therefore more costly. Core i9, Ryzen 3 vs. Ryzen 5 vs. Ryzen 7 vs. Ryzen 9, Ad-free TechSpot experience while supporting our work. i7 8700k = i9 9900k.
There’s certainly more work involved to clean it up as the solder is much harder to remove than paste, but it can be done.
We find a similar story when testing with Blender though the AMD CPUs did perform better in this application and as a result the 2950X was able to work a bit harder, but even so it still consume less power than the 9900K. The 9900K on the other hand peaked at 79 C for the package and 78 C on the cores while running at 1.366v. hear the extra two physical cores > extra threads for gaming atleast, Achievements, Pet Battles, and Transmogrification, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft Online Cardgame. Anyway, this comparison should give us a pretty good idea of just how much of an improvement Intel’s STIM makes. In comparison the 9900K peaked at 91 degrees for the core and 90 C for the package. So pretty toasty stuff and again this is why we decided to run these processors at 5 GHz for GPU testing.
However we’re not fans of delidding, it voids your warranty, it can be risky and we’d rather you didn’t have to do it, particularly when spending at least $500 on an unlocked CPU that’s intended to be overclocked.
The gains are reasonable at stock frequencies, they just aren’t as impressive as we’d hoped for. I hear they have practically hit the absolute limit with 14nm, even if you do "overclock" a 9700k it ends up only being 100-200mhz more from what I have seen, I hear getting to 5.1ghz is actually quite hard.
On a slightly different subject, readers were asking how is it possible for the Ryzen 7 2700X, also an 8-core/16-thread CPU, to run so much cooler?

Der8auer recently discovered when delidding the 9900K that the die is significantly thicker than that of the 8700K, I won’t give his exact measurements, if you want those please go check out his video, he’s done some great work there. Also helping with thermals is the CCX design which sees them lumped into groups of 4, rather than a solid block of 8. For the first test configuration we locked both the 9900K and 8086K at 4.5 GHz on the MSI Z390 Godlike. There’s likely a number of reasons why Intel had to increase the height of the silicon.
Core i9, Ryzen 3 vs. Ryzen 5 vs. Ryzen 7 vs. Ryzen 9, Ad-free TechSpot experience while supporting our work. The Core i5-9600K is both cool and frugal on your energy bill, whilst you have to overclock the nuts off the Core i7-9700K before it shows any sign of heating up or making your meter spin. Just recently we reviewed Intel's latest Core i9-9900K and Core i7-9700K processors. This was worse than what we saw previously with the 8700K at 5.2 GHz, granted the 9900K packs more cores, but it’s soldered whereas the 8700K uses Intel’s notoriously rubbish thermal paste.
At the end of the day it seems Intel is pushing everything to the limits and therefore were forced to solder in order to maximise thermal conductivity. Part of the reason I opted for the 9700k over the 8700k is that I just flat out refuse to de-lid.

Here we see the 8086K hitting a peak temperature of 94 C for the core and package at 1.380v, this resulted in a package TDP of 188 watts.
Yes, this is not a typo.
