The island’s chequered past makes it fertile grounds for storytelling; it’s beguiling nature is exactly what Dennis Kelly and Felix Barrett were looking for when they set out to create their groundbreaking new Sky psychological thriller, The Third Day. But while the mysteries and drama at the heart of The Third Day might be fictional, the real-life story of this island is intriguing in its own right. Some people believe Charrington, the founder, was famed killer Jack the Ripper.

“I had this idea that our main guy would have something inside that he was searching for, that was unanswered,” says co-creator Kelly. The population of the Island is included in the civil parish of Heybridge.

Both the 1989 television adaptation of Susan Hill's novel The Woman in Black and the 2012 film adaptation of the same used the island's causeway as the location for the fictional Nine Lives Causeway. Osea has a fascinating and colourful past echoing back some 5000 years. Music producer Nigel Frieda purchased the island for $6 million in 2000, and he's since made Osea's biggest draw its recording studio. Osea will forever hold a very special place in my heart.
