Bai Qian has been reduced to a pathetic goddess who not only can’t fight on her own without Ye Hua swooping in to save her like a damsel in distress, but a screaming parrot who just stands there as she watches her shifu and fiance practically kill themselves. And yeah, I can’t stop staring at the lacy, translucent sleeves on Bai Qian’s dress.

Does Ye Hua only love Bai Qian because he looks like SuSu? And since we don’t see Ye Hua trying to confirm that Bai Qian is SuSu it was quite confusing at first.

It’s as if the film is rushing to just get this over with by showing you all the important parts and then ta-da, the end. The characters are not only one-dimensional but just…annoying. I’m so glad I got to catch Once Upon A Time in the theaters since living in Australia meant Asian movies aren’t as popular and hence rarely get screened in the cinemas. HAHA I thought it was so bad it’s good but yeah probably won’t watch it again. I had a hard time wondering what the film was really going for. My point is the TV drama gives a perfect background story to justify.

For a high-budget fantasy film like this, it’s a given that pretty costumes are a must-have. ( Log Out /  Only a few of the scenes were good.

But I think in the drama version there was already so much build-up that it felt more natural to me as compared to the movie. This movie is based on the popular Chinese drama Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossom. Plus…is that clear plastic wrap being substituted as ‘ice’ around Mo Yuan’s body? I wish I look as good as him with my hair down. I know I sound like a social justice warrior screaming feminist but no, this is not the Bai Qian or Ye Hua that I know. I watched it in the cinema and had a great time laughing (even at the parts that weren’t meant to be funny). ( Log Out /  Whenever Yang Yang appears on screen with his long, dark hair down I just can’t help but squeal inside at how pretty he is! And Liu Yifei is just gorgeous as usual. This, for me, might be one of those movies that it’s so bad, it’s actually good (though obviously not it’s main purpose). Goes to show how deceptive a beautifully-cut trailer can be. The trailer made the movie seemed so poetic, cleverly inserting lines of dialogue that cuts right into the depths of your heart, coupled with high-budget set design that pulls you into the Peach Blossom world. I’m not sure if the director was going for a comic-satire sort of vibe or was he and Luo Jin just making fun of Zhe Yan as a character. Insisting on calling Bai Qian “Qian Qian” right after they just met is just plain creepy. Having already seen the incredibly successful Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (and loving it to bits) I grabbed on to the opportunity to see it on the big screen despite having heard some negative reviews about it. Also, he refused to address her ‘Aunt’ (at least that’s the English translation as I do not understand Chinese language) since Ah Li called her ‘Mother’. Not entirely accurate to the novel since Ye Hua is supposed to be decked in full black (I’m guessing?) Not entirely a fan of the CGI effects which the directors had lavished into the film. Yang Yang held his own quite well with his charisma and that smile…*squeals disgustingly*. ( Log Out /  Might have to do with the many unnecessary closeup shots and the lack of the wide, open-spaced establishing shots often seen in the TV series. Source. Was thinking of checking this movie out bc I’m still in withdrawal from the drama version but … I think I should pass haha.
