Nelli produced large-scale spiritual paintings in an era when women were relegated to …
One of the most striking things about Nelli is her choice of subject. “And in the houses of gentlemen throughout Florence, there are so many pictures, that it would be tedious to attempt to speak of them all,” wrote Giorgio Vasari in his Lives of Painters, Sculptors and Architects of Plautilla Nelli’s artworks.. But the painting’s emotional power shone through the yellowing varnish and prompted Fortune to action. Early female artists simply did not tackle history painting, life-size figures and least of all Last Suppers which came to symbolize male mastery.
When she was 14 years old, she was placed at the convent of Santa Caterina di Cafaggio and adopted the new name of Plautilla. We’re also on Pinterest, Tumblr, and Flipboard.

Plautilla Nelli is AWA's driving force and primary muse. A nun of the Dominican convent of St. Catherine of Siena, she was highly influenced by the teaching of Savonarola and by the artwork of Fra Bartolomeo. Suor Plautilla Nelli TOSD (1524–1588) was a self-taught nun-artist—the first-known female Renaissance painter of Florence, Italy. There is a modern-day street in Florence, Via del Canto de’ Nelli, in the San Lorenzo district, named for her family, and the New Sacristy of the Church of San Lorenzo is the original site of her family homes. An art treasure for Nelli’s order at the Last Super Museum of Andrea del Sarto, Florence. She was known to paint beautifully and very quickly, attracting many visitors to her studio who enjoyed watching her work. An Italian Baroque painter, Artemisia Gentileschi is regarded as one of the most accomplished painters in the generation following that of Caravaggio.

A non-profit organization called Advancing Women Artists raised funds to restore the painting and put it on permanent display. In 2017, the US-based organization Advancing Women Artists Foundation (AWA) started a crowdfunding campaign to restore Sister Plautilla's painting of The Last Supper.

Working over the course of six decades, she became the best-documented woman artist of the Dutch Golden Age. Plautilla Nelli - A Self-Taught Nun-Artist A self-taught nun-artist, Plautilla Nelli was the first-known woman Renaissance painter of Florence. Nelli was a nun and self-taught artist working during the Italian Renaissance. “I asked the museum director if it would be possible to clean and restore the painting, and that question changed my life,” Fortune explains. After moving to Rome to pursue her career, she became a portraitist at the court of Pope Paul V, receiving numerous honors, such as a bronze portrait medallion cast by sculptor and architect Felice Antonio Casoni.
