There is robust evidence, for example, that cardiovascular disease and stroke can increase the risk of social isolation and loneliness and also of low social support; conversely, there is also research indicating that people who have cerebrovascular or cardiovascular disease may have worse outcomes if they are socially isolated or lonely (Air et al., 2016). Determining how the lives of older adults aged 50 and over may be affected by social isolation and loneliness is central to the committee’s charge; however, the scope of the committee’s work also extends to the particular impacts for at-risk (i.e., vulnerable) populations. The most common reason for placing a patient in protective isolation is if his or her blood neutrophil count falls, or is expected to fall, below 0.5 x 109/l. While older adults are not unique in having these life-altering experiences, some disruptive events are more likely to occur, or to occur at a greater frequency, for people over the age of 50.
