mxl v67g mod

Posted on October 8th, 2020

You're not going to be happy with either in the long run, or even the short run. To my ear, all three of these RK-series capsule choices result in viable mods; each provides an audible reduction in the mic’s 12kHz response, and a smoother response overall. The all important transformer capacitor has been replaced with a high grade 1UF Axon film capacitor. i owned a v67g a while ago but i sold it to finance other mics.

I use Mil spec resistors and some Siemens, Phillips, Polystyrene film caps and Mil spec Sprague solid Tantalum capacitors.

Leave the grille alone, or replace it with one that was designed as a 2-layer mesh. The purple trace shows the V67G with an RK-47 capsule. The V67G is 1–2dB leaner in the 4–8kHz range, and 2–4dB darker above about 15kHz. Sensitivity jumps from ~15mV/Pa (stock) to ~35mV/Pa (modded). Ultimo aggiornamento: 09-Oct 22:48.

Cad 100 was unchanged, the Audio Technica 4040 had a golden finer grid . Matt, I should include with that last post that the headbasket mod would be in addition to v57 pcb upgrade and rk87 capsule swap. I confess that for me as VoiceOver talent i share the same opinion. We recommend installing the RK-47 or RK-12 capsule with this circuit. The V67G is 1–2dB leaner in the 4–8kHz range, and 2–4dB darker above about 15kHz. It also has no cosmetic marks. The result is that your recorded tracks will need less EQ, and will stack better in a mix. Another option is our RK-12, which has a smoother top end even than the RK-87, and a warmer low frequency response. Here are a few of the differences among these mics: the MXL 3000 has a few upgrades as compared to the others, including a large film capacitor feeding the transformer, and a direct-coupled front end to avoid the need for an input cap. The capsule is the component that has the most significant impact on the sound captured by the mic. Replacing capsules requires soldering. With which route will my dollar go further? Leaning towards C1 vs. V67G. Here is a comparison sweep of the V67G with a variety of different-sounding capsules*: The red trace shows the stock microphone, with its somewhat unwelcome and exaggerated 12kHz peak.

EUR 10,92. It is harsh, grainy, and a bit sibilant, but I know companies like jj audio and Joly do mods on these that are "u87 attempts". Honestly, they both suck. I have refined my mod to the V67g to the point that I replace all of the capacitors and resistors. Internal switches give your mic a second polar pattern (Omni) as well as a 10dB pad. @Angelo, I agree that these graphs do not represent a comprehensive description of a mic’s sound, but they’re extraordinarily useful here because the specific characteristic we’re investigating is the high-frequency peak that is common to inexpensive Chinese-made LDCs.

I can get the C1 with the case, mount and everything for 125. Yeah, a .47 would add a bit more low. Each provides a different frequency curve, which means it is possible to create a couple different-sounding microphones just by swapping different capsules into this one donor platform. It has an intentionally bright response, but the high-frequency peak is broader and smoother than a typical K67 type. The V67G circuit has a transformer, but it's a low-ratio unit. I suspect this is due to variances in the capsules, because making capsules sound exactly the same is difficult and expensive.

), Nice! The MXL V63M and the older MXL V57 are both transformerless microphones with “linear” circuits — meaning, the circuits don’t do any attenuation.

Better to spend more and have to wait for other gear than to pay for a mic I'm gonna end up wanting to upgrade soon. 20th October 2013 #2. This German was in love with Portuguese wines and Travel .

I am familiar with the sound of my voice to the models of mxl and audio technica, as well as oktava.

The laminates are probably made from scrape Chinese car bumpers, lol! That transformer is poor quality! Less shrill. Great stuff. The rig has been calibrated with a $950 measurement mic, and I use “time windowing” to reduce the effect of room reflections. Click for more info on the T-84 circuit kit. I've used it for all kinds of commercial recordings and not found it wanting. Also, louder? I already own an MXL v67g, which I bought as a knock around mic a while back. My bad I was talking about the Studio Projects C1.

It gives you a very high-sensitivity, low-noise, low-distortion microphone with a pristine, clean, uncolored sound. I tested two to make sure I was starting with a microphone that offers performance representative of the product: The two microphones have a frequency response that is nearly identical up to about 12kHz. If it were me I'd go for the v67g. With a replacement capsule, this circuit mod also gives you an internal switch that can be used for pattern control (Cardioid/Omni). It has a more neutral high end than the original, which means your V67/V67G will have a less peaky, less fatiguing acoustic profile.

Someone in Italy manufacture different grids to the microphones and apply them, refusing to move mostly in capsules or circuits. JJ Audio conducted extensive tests on this microphone and found some very nice mods for this mic that improve the sound of this microphone. The Cad was my first experience and the sound in my voice seem to be between the sound of RODE nt1a and NT2A.

The best mic to go with is the one that suits your voice. These same feelings also happen with cheap microphones. It will provide significant sonic upgrades to your microphone: higher sensitivity, lower noise, lower distortion, dramatically superior tone.

You can see this in the graph: the RK-12 has higher output in the 5–10kHz range, relative to the peak, than any other model. Regarding the V67, there is a new transformer circuit for that mic that is pretty great: Do you think you could do some photos of what it takes to swap out the capsules? His landmark MXL 2001 tube mod article has inspired countless audio engineers to rebuild and upgrade their inexpensive condenser […] Darrell Eidson. When I connect it to my Tascam US200, the sound improved 5 times. For now, let’s get back to the point of this one: simple but very effective mods. At the moment i own an at4050, 2 mxl v69's, gefell m691 w m70 cap, a neumann km150 and i have some akg 414's (among other mics) and it compares nicely with those (not better just different). If your local store lets you, try demoing it out along with a few other mics in that price range. But I’m confident that all these use substantially the same circuit design, and similar capsules. These go for $399 new ... as you can see, that's what I paid. Many people would argue that the single characteristic of those mics that prevents it from being usable on many sources is the frequency response. I’ve got more 990s and and an MXL V67G that I’m sure I’ll end up modding as well. Large Capsule Condenser Microphone "Old school tube mellow" is the phrase most often used to describe the sound of the V67G from MXL. I spent an afternoon in the test lab* with a couple of these microphones. It is not news to anyone reading this that there is a ton of decent, affordable pro audio gear on the market.

Personally I think and always found the sound mxl 2006 and VO1 identical … and even with this change, the mids attendance has improved and opened sound. EUR 11,09. I just ordered the former and plan on order the later very soon.

Re-laminating the transformer is your best bet, though. When I use it in my Universal Audio 710 (Made in the USA) the sound has improved 20 times. We recommend replacing it with our RK-87. I'm in the process of making a 2001 into a Sony C-37ish clone and I'm almost done. In this article, we’ll take a look at a simple and very effective modification for one of the most popular microphones on the market: the MXL V67G. It has 3dB higher output than the stock microphone, which means the modded mic’s noise floor will be audibly lower than before. I can get a Shure KSM27 with the shock mount, in all original packaging for $149 from a local shop. You need an account to post a reply. Or, I can help coordinate having your mic serviced, via technicians in Nashville, Texas, and Los Angeles.

What else have you found changed, when inserting a new capsule? I'll post the results as well. See a comparison frequency-response analysis of the V67G: with stock capsule, RK-87, RK-12, RK-87, here. check out the. The 2001/V67G circuit doesn’t come close to the same level of attenuation, though. I never went that far 'cause I gutted it later for the Royer... http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/sho...d.php?t=134831, Recording with tablets & smartphones (iOS & Android). Over the sound of the microphones, not only these but the rest … through the time I realized that the preamp makes all the difference. I’l love to see a accompanying article about EQ circuit mods like the SP C1/C3 mod and MXL 603 mod with comparisons with “factory modded” mics. The SC-450 has switchable pad and HPF options. I’d probably pick the 2001 just because I think it looks less ridiculous than the V67 . Honestly, I would not stoop any lower than a 150 dollar condenser. Avoid single-layer mesh unless it is somehow damped to reduce resonance. Get the KSM27 off of ebay. The photo at right shows the new circuit, which uses two high-quality two-layer PCBs manufactured in the US. The mics are identical, and say, on the casing: MXL V67 Mogami The new circuit is transformerless; it's a highly optimized version of the circuit in the famous Schoeps CMC-5 microphone. Personally, if it seems too good to be true (underpriced) it probably is. Nuovo. You will receive an MXL V67G that has been modified with a new Neumann type high gain FET Transistor (U87)  (re-biased). The grill is modified to have a more open grill structure (less screening, thus less distortion of the incoming audio). Response and overall clarity of the microphone is increased. The SC450 got a fuller sound, while the V67 has not changed significantly … just the frequency bass a little higher. Were identical in shape and size … just the color was different. This kit fits the Apex 420, 430, and most other MXL 2001/V67G types. The fact that this one is $150 when new is $500 scares me. Both use a circuit that combines elements of the Neumann U87 and AKG C414 EB. JJ Audio finally decided that they wanted to see if they could get the sound of this mic close to the sound of the Neumann U87 microphone. If you get 30 trouble free days their hands are brushed clean. The MXL 2006 and the VO1 had a grid with thhiker holes and with a mixture of acrylic. But it is still peaky, and suffers from a lack of consistency -- some capsules sound better than others. The degree to which these change, and the sort of change that results, depends entirely on the specific model and even the specific capsule. The stock MXL V67/V67G capsule is a 32mm version of the Neumann K67; according to the designer, the diameter was reduced in hopes of pushing the capsule's natural resonance out of the audio band. MXL V67G Cardioid Condenser Microphone. Yet despite the influence of these landmark microphones, the circuit and capsule implementation of the V67 leave a lot of room for improvement.
