Some I found disturbing, such as "The Hitchhiking Game," in which a role-playing game goes a little too psychologically far, "Let the Old Dead Make Way for the New Dead," in which the lead male character ponders whether it's better to have a delightful memory or a less delightful reality, and "Symposium," a multi-voiced tale with some largely thoughtless cruelty. This was the first book from Kundera that I read. I never expected that this book by Kundera would be so captivating, that it almost transfixed me in one place for one whole night and left me laughing. I do like Kundera's sense of humour. Some I found playful and thought-provoking, such as "Nobody Will Laugh," about a man who starts out playing a largely innocent joke which then spirals out of control, "Doctor Havel in Ten Years," which shows how our state of mind can affect reality, and "Edward and God," which satirizes both religion and atheism while showing what happens to a character who pretends belief to get a girl. Refresh and try again. And of the six Kundera books I've now read I'd say this was almost on a par with my favourite, Immortality. What he does with the topics in the book really makes it a real emotional experience. One story revolved around a young professor who loves to play mind-games with people he deems inferior. by the end, i thought i would die if i had to read one more sentence about the game of chasing women and getting them into bed or the importance of an attractive female body.

There is even some (nicely done) psychological analysis of some of the characters. Don't praise Kundera just because you think you should. The needle on the gas gauge suddenly dipped toward empty and the young driver of the sports car declared that it was maddening how much gas the car ate up. The characters are pretty well developed for the story form and quite memorable as well. maybe this is a true portrait of his inner psyche? Kundera is a beautiful writer but that is my only positive comment on the matter. I remembered liking this more, but it is a tell-tale sign when I can't remember anything else about a book—as the really good'uns sear themselves into your poetic memory, don't they, so that you have to carry them with you, like it or lump it, through time (it does get kinda heavy, then, don't it, reelin' in the years). Maybe I'll return to it later, but as of now it seems to drastically pale when compared to The Lightness of Being.
