how to use headset mic on mac

I've been looking around and have come to the realization I'll have to buy an amp for the mic portion. The PC and cell-phone world saw the appeal of this and many manufacturers are now delivering Apple compatible TRRS 4-Pole headsets … WHen I test the mic on my mac system preferences it is detected and seems to show good sound levels, but when I go ventrilo and try to set up, the system just does not seem to register any sound elvels. Update: I think I've got what the problem is. I have the same issue with having purchased both USB and standard input mic/headset combos, but I can not get any sort of amplification to be heard on Ventrilo. It appears that that is compatible with iPhone headsets. So I was almost there.
