The author, Guy Vanderhaeghe, wrote 3 well know western novels, The Last Crossing, A Good Man and The Englishman's Boy (that was made into this movie).

The series first aired on July 7, 2015. A movie producer in 1920s Hollywood tries to track down an elusive Western star for his next picture. I would recommend it to those who have read the Guy Vanderhaeghe books or those who know western history enough to connect the fiction to the actual locations and events and can view it as one man interpretation of how it really happened. Hardened to frontier life, the Wolfers weed out the weak from their ranks as they head north to recover stolen horses, one way or another.

I must mention in particular , Nicholas Campbell as the guilt-ridden Shorty Mcadoo , Michael Eisner as the boy, , Michael Therriault as Vincent , R.H. Thompson as Hardwick and Bob Hooskins as Chance .This is not a plesant movie to watch but stay it with it as you will be rewarded at the end . Having read the novel, one can quickly surmise that this rendition should have been made into a proper film instead of a two part CBC television series. The Boy (Michael Eisner) survives but is tortured by what he has seen. I know that some of the outdoor scenery may look the same but from different angles,but that is not what makes this release stand out. Sam Sparks (Shaun Evans) is a charming, young chancer who moves to London.

Critics have accused Mr. Campbell of showing too much restraint in his performance; but the actor had his own real life demons to contend with, and I feel he channels this angst in his performance.
