Cart Marking is now recognised as the second largest annual public spectacle in the City of London, exceeded only by the Lord Mayor's Show. Those already in possession of a marked board should use that board since boards are issued to members of the Company for their personal use in their lifetime and are not specific to any one Cart. c.            Attendance numbers at Lunch. This year the Carmen celebrated their 502nd anniversary and annual Cart Marking Ceremony took place in Guildhall Yard commencing at 10.00am on Wednesday 17th July 2019. there were a total of 47 vehicles marked between the Master Carmen, Stephen Britt, The Rt.Hon The Lord Mayor of London Alderman Peter Estlin  and the Master Glover Rodney Jagelman. The Royal Logistic Corps were in attendance and officers and soldiers of 19 Tank Transporter Squadron RLC assisted in the running of the event with a number of Police from the City. The Carmen's fellowship is rooted in the past. A Carman Fellowship has existed since before 1277 which became the Fraternyte of Seynt Katryne the Virgin and Master of Carters in 1517 which then agreed to serve the City in various ways and to carry goods at reasonable rates. Whilst the actual Marking is the prerogative of the Keeper of the Guildhall it has become customary for it to be shared between the Master Carman and the Lord Mayor. The Master thanked those who had been instrumental in making the event a success including the Chairman of the Cart Marking Panel, Assistant Richard Buswell, and his Committee. as he sought more support for the £1m derelict Old School in Fleet Street which the Company’s heritage trustees are restoring and developing as the Carmen’s future Hall and transport learning centre, with lecture hall, gallery, and museum in the 1834 Grade I listed building  in the heart of the City. scite, cito, certe — skilfully, swiftly, surely.

Interestingly, it is generally accepted that Cart Marking historically represents the first ever form of vehicle licensing. Other significant attendees included the Chief Commoner, Tom Hoffman CC, and Sheriff Liz Green. Other Panel representatives are drawn from the Police, City Highways (who advise on road works, meter closures and even the re-timing of traffic lights), and of course Guildhall who are responsible for seating, public address, yard security and more. The Licensing of Carts was then vested in the City under the control of the General Purposes Committee, with operations being vested in the Keeper of the Guildhall and Records being maintained by the City Remembrancer. The growth of the Event, coupled with numerous legislative requirements, not least those related to Health and Safety, Highways and the Police, means that planning for the next Event commences immediately after the previous one has finished.
