Dinner was at the hotel, in a glorious sunset. A quality pub in a unique riverside spot, The Shipwrights serves a menu that changes based on that day’s catch and has a beer garden perched overlooking the peaceful Helford River. A traditional family-run country pub with accommodating staff and friendly locals, as well as a locally sourced menu and a whole host of evening activities to get involved in. The location was a great base.
Next we headed up the coast to Porthleven, a delightful fishing port near Helston, the only town on the Lizard. But when the tide is in and the waves are larger we suggest heading to the aptly-named Devil’s Frying Pan, a collapsed cave nearby, to watch as it bubbles and boils.

A 16th Century inn that lives up to its name, The Old Inn is in the heart of Mullion with locally sourced food by a passionate chef and a cosy environment ideal for a post-sea-swim pint. With only two roads on to the peninsula, development has remained fairly low, and the various villages display their long seafaring heritage with pride. With a history traceable back to the 1830s, The Five Pilchards has been around for a while and they know a thing or two about seafood. Here are our top suggestions for beaches both renowned and unknown.
Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife on this circular walk around the very end of the peninsula. The Lizard Peninsula has endless offerings if you’re on the hunt for a good beach. Whether it’s a hot chocolate and cake after a slightly chilly swim or fresh seafood caught mere hours ago, your food and drink cravings are more than catered for on the Lizard. We sampled the Curio gin – distilled in Mullion and flavoured with foraged rock samphire – at the Cadgwith Cove Inn, an old smugglers’ haunt where the Cadgwith Singers still perform sea shanties every Friday night. Very cosy but everything that was needed was in the hut. The roads are narrow and winding, but we were untroubled by traffic jams – the only holdups were caused by the odd tractor. It also has some permanent residents, including grey and common seals, sea lions, otters and penguins, and a daily programme of talks and feeding times. It is too dangerous to swim here – which perhaps explains why we had such a huge expanse of beach to ourselves.
Soft sand and easy access from the nearby car park means we recommend Poldhu beach for families. “Cornish tapas” starters (three for £15) included potted crab, and while the fish stew (£14) was underwhelming, the shellfish platter (£26) more than made up for it: a pile of crab claws, scallops, prawns and mussels, all caramelised in the wood-fired oven. Not only is it an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but there are also eight Sites of Special Scientific Interest to protect wildlife and geology. I would just say get to the car parks at the beach early as they get filled up really quick especially Kynance Cove where we arrived at half 9 it was getting busy.
A sleepy village near the top of the Helford River, Mawgan is a great place from which to explore the Lizard and is steeped in nautical history like so much of this area. Maybe you’ll strap on a helmet and go coasteering, learn about the local wildlife or simply slope off for some of the best ice cream around. The next morning, we breakfasted on home-smoked salmon at Kota Kai, Kota’s informal sister restaurant. Very cosy but everything that was needed was in the hut. A local pub that really is the life of the village, with great food and a relaxed, seafaring vibe inside. Error: (Helston has seen better days, but is well worth stopping for a Spingo ale at the Blue Anchor Inn, where it has been brewed for 600 years.) Down the coast path from Lizard Point, this little cove is quietly beautiful and often empty. More information. Tearing ourselves away from Squidge, the baby penguin, we took in Helford, a picturesque riverside village with a ferry carrying passengers between pubs on either riverbank; St Keverne, with its pretty village square; and Coverack, a fishing village with a lovely little harbour and a rocky beach. This well-known pub was packed with tourists and locals, so we headed back to sleepier Mullion for dinner (by taxi as it had started to pour with rain). You’re on holiday – ice cream is a must! Cornwall has been a popular holiday destination for well over a century, but in recent years it has become a victim of overtourism. It would be far better visited out of season and at low tide, though, when the caves and islands can be explored. The little village is lovely with quaint little shops and the community are all really friendly and welcoming. We loved staying here. It can also organise wild swimming sessions and surf lessons, or sea kayaking, paddleboarding and coasteering with Lizard Adventure.

See the Cornish coast in a whole new way, by jumping off it! If lazy afternoons and gentles strolls are what you’re after, Mawgan will not disappoint. Dinner was the best meal of the trip: a seven-course tasting menu (£60pp) of Cornish produce with a subtle Asian twist – Kota’s chef, Jude Kereama, is half Maori, half Chinese (Kota means shellfish in Maori). Calmer and more peaceful now, it is perhaps best known as the home to the National Seal Sanctuary. Sorry, we were unable to update a shortlist for you.
