William Baziotes was born in 1912 to Greek parents in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the 1940s he became friends with many artists in the emerging Abstract Expressionist group. He had his first solo show at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century Gallery in 1944 and a second one in 1946 at the Samuel Kootz Gallery.
