The connection between Simon and Martha, Mary and Lazarus is unclear. "[Jn 11:21, 32] But where Jesus' response to Martha is one of teaching, calling her to hope and faith, his response to Mary is more emotional: "When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. It was interesting to see the ideas in this article, as I had to face all the sorts of questions mentioned and come to some “educated guesses” about them. Hugh Pope then explained the identification of Mary of Bethany with Mary Magdalene by the presumption that, because of Jesus’ high praise of her deed of anointing him, it would be incredible that she should also not have been at his crucifixion and resurrection.

Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”, For Mary to sit at Jesus' feet, and for him to allow her to do so, was itself controversial. 26:11; Mark 14:7; John 12:8). Mary and Martha of Bethany are well-known Bible figures. (I believe the account in Luke 7:36-50 refers to a previous, unrelated anointing by an unknown woman that occurred earlier in Jesus’ ministry. not so many know what it’s like to have a beautiful, unmarried “lady” in the household that, due to circumstances beyond her control, has learned how to make her living as so many women do today-with their body. She strongly believes that if we are in Christ we are part of the New Creation and part of a community where old social paradigms of hierarchies and caste or class systems have no place (2 Cor. It is remarkable that already in John 11:2, John has spoken of Mary as "she that anointed the Lord's feet", he aleipsasa. ), [2] The name “Essenes” has been given to the community that collected and produced the writings we know as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Martha goes immediately to meet Jesus as he arrives, while Mary waits until she is called. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.

What better way to own a “gift” from a client that has the value of a year’s wage attached to it? In desperation Martha and Mary send for Jesus. Martha said to him “I know he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day”. Since Mary Magdalene is reported to have been present on those occasions, by this reasoning, she must therefore be the same person as Mary of Bethany: An examination of John's Gospel makes it almost impossible to deny the identity of Mary of Bethany with Mary Magdalen.
