He is really passionate and easy to listen to. He told us exactly what he expected and he helped us develop our essay writing skills instead of just expecting us to be experts. Really funny. The seed for developing the course was planted years ago when Demers was a literacy volunteer at the notorious Kingston Penitentiary, which is now closed. One of the best profs I had so far. Not mandatory to attend, he posts his slides after class. I recommend this prof to everyone!! He is the perfect balance between serious and humorous, and is always willing to help out when needed. He is the author of Warehousing Prisoners in Saskatchewan: A Public Health Approach. Very nice guy but I did not enjoy his class at all. He won't make you write or read ridiculous amounts. This is my all time favourite prof. Great prof! I highly recommend this prof! He's hilarious and willing to help if you need it. I had an enjoyable time in his class because he made me want to know more. This week, the U of R's Jason Demers is launching a new course called Prison Writing. I took him for a 3-hour evening class. He was very passionate about his job and picked the best stories to read. Jason is an insanely passionate teacher. Closed Captioning and Described Video is available for many CBC shows offered on CBC Gem. There is a lot of readings but the exam at the end is not difficult. He's also very supportive towards everybody in the class.

Prison Writing is for English and justice studies students. I liked him a lot. If you want an easy English class take this guy. He understands the value of a 100 level English course. He's amazing- take his class if you can. When I was in Jasons class, he always came prepared, he marked fairly, and we only had 3 essays and an in-class essay graded on and they were all very clear about what he wanted. He is a smart man and a fantastic speaker. A University of Regina instructor is hoping to help his students understand what it's like to be in prison by studying the writings of people behind bars. In support of Dr. Demers, the First Nations University of Regina’s Library curated a large box of books (50 books have been donated so far) based on the topics that the incarcerated students were interested in learning more about – some were culture, some were specific books (such as There, There by Tommy Orange and Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese), and others were suggestions that students and faculty gave to us when told about the project. I have been to tutors and writing sessions to try to improve my essays but still get low marks. The readings were interesting and the essays were really not that hard. I enjoyed this class because of Jason. Did not enjoy this class. If you write his essays the night before, expect to get a mark that reflects that. The content and themes are heavy, but with very few papers (three short essays) and no midterm this class was easy and fun! He really made my first semester an enjoyable one!
