So when I saw it on the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book of the Year – Older Readers Notable List 2020, I selected it for review without even reading the blurb. I have bipolar II and it's refreshing to have representation in novels, to talk more freely about these things instead of pretending like they don't happen. Final thoughts: I had no idea how the plot would play out, but I liked the ending.

How it Feels to Float is an incredibly beautifully written novel that explores grief, anxiety, depression and dissociative disorder in the most careful of ways. Bad that follows you and empties you. This book really is amazing. Overall I really liked this book because it’s such a brilliantly written diverse read with sumptuous prose and a main character that really touched my heart. But despite all these things I find myself only wanting to give the book three stars because at times I was too overcome with emotion… I think perhaps my own mental well-being was just challenged a little too much and sadly I somewhat regret having read this book when I’ve had a tough week myself. So while I highly recommend this book I do want to make sure that anyone going into this book has their eyes wide open. “Don’t judge a book by its cover” – yes, I know, but I did this time! Thanks!

How It Feels to Float was beautifully written and I was completely taken in by Biz. This book is wonderful in how Biz is allowed to be herself. Also, I’ve noticed YA mental health books are often blue or purple? It doesn’t define who she is.

i love this review so very much. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It’s written in a style that is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Squeeze. Discuss the forms of love within this book-crazy and romantic love, neighborly love and compassion, love for the natural world, and a mother's love.

Haunting.” —Kirkus (starred review) ★ "Biz is smart, funny, and self-deprecating . I wouldn’t have minded learning more about their pasts or problems. The trauma of losing her father causes her mental illness issues, which we never get a true diagnosis for (although I'd hazard a guess that with the photographs speaking to her, and her seeing her father that she either has schizophrenia or Bipolar I with psychotic features) to progressively get worse and she ultimately ends up in a psychiatric ward.

Great Debut Novel About Mental Illness, Family, Young Love and Friendship, Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2019, Great Debut Novel about Mental Illness, Family, Young Love and Friendship. Really good but oh so painful. Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2019. It was very different and unique. Captivating and beautiful narration. This is one of the most accurate portrayals of mental illness I’ve ever seen and it absolutely blew me away. I loved the relationships Biz built with Jasper and Sylvia. TW: slut shaming, anxiety, dissociation, depression. We realized she was a fairly unreliable narrator, but not by choice. Right from the very first page, I was drawn into the mind and heart of the main character, Biz.
