Medieval goldsmiths were some of the most important craftsmen because they worked with precious metals. Silver furniture, a feature of the state rooms at Versailles, became fashionable among kings and noblemen. He even had his own small collection of antique pieces. This was a sign of the times: artists were no longer considered mere craftworkers as there was an obvious intellectual element to their work as they studied the past and considered such theories as mathematical perspective.

Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571 CE) was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, medallist, and goldsmith whose most famous works today include the bronze statue of Perseus holding the head of Medusa, which now stands in Florence, and a magnificent gold salt cellar made for Francis I of France (r. 1515-1547 CE), now in Vienna.
